What's RCF?

Hey today I wonder what are the two abbreviations used in a centrifuge machine. One if RPM, revolution/rotation per minute and the other is RCF, relative centrifugal force. You might have heard the word RPM, and can easily guess what it means. But how about RCF?

RCF, relative centrifugal force means the relative force given during centrifugation. RCF is not absolute unit of force, but the relative force unit based on gravity. So RCF is typically written like 8,000 x g (g means gravity).

It can be calculated by the following equation:

RCF = 1.12 x r x ( RPM/1000)^2

r: radius (mm)

It's much easier than it sounds, right :) ?
